In Hausen, a district of the municipality of Oberaula in the Schwalm-Eder district, Hesse, stands Hausen Castle. Originally a moated castle from the 13th century, it was transformed into a Renaissance castle and remains in private ownership to this day.

History+

The first documented mention of the village of Hausen dates back to 1160. In the 13th century, a moated castle owned by Fulda Abbey existed there. In 1311, Abbot Heinrich IV of Fulda assigned an hereditary feudal payment for the castle to Knight Wernher von Lebenstein to curb the influence of the Counts of Ziegenhain. At the same time, the village was granted town rights. After the Lords of Vinken and Falkenberg, the Counts of Ziegenhain became co-owners from 1366. In 1400, Fulda sold its share to the Archbishopric of Mainz. After the death of the last Count of Ziegenhain in 1450, their half passed to the Landgraviate of Hesse, which later also gained sovereignty over the Mainz share.
