Heddernheim Castle

In 1740, Philipp Wilhelm von Riedt commissioned the construction of the New Castle in Heddernheim as a family residence. A concern of the builder was the restoration of Catholic worship, which had been interrupted after the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War. Mr. von Riedt established a house church within the castle and appointed his own clergyman, who, from 1746, also headed the newly founded Catholic parish of Heddernheim. The former churchyard located in front of the castle was transformed into a park. Through female inheritance, the estate passed to the Lords of Breidbach-Bürresheim in 1764, who were high officials at the court of Nassau. This led to Heddernheim Castle frequently becoming the scene of festive events, attended by the Duke himself.
