Hellbrunn Castle

History+
The construction of Hellbrunn Palace took place between 1613 and 1615 under Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, who was elected Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg in 1612. He had the complex built as a villa suburbana outside the gates of Salzburg, following Italian models, integrating an existing late Gothic noble residence. Santino Solari, who was also responsible for the new construction of Salzburg Cathedral, was the architect of this building. A special highlight are the world's best-preserved late Renaissance water features, which boast numerous jokes and moving figures, as well as grottos adorned with sculptures. Between 1749 and 1752, under Archbishop Andreas Jakob von Dietrichstein, the elaborate “Mechanical Theater” was added, complementing the old water features.
