Hemhofen Castle

The history of Hemhofen Castle begins in 1650, when it passed as a wedding gift from the Truchsess von Pommersfelden to his daughter and her husband Philipp Graf zu Pappenheim. After the count's death and a subsequent marriage, Hemhofen came into the possession of Baron von Töstelberg in 1660. He began constructing the current castle in 1715. Apparently dissatisfied with the progress, he sold the estate and its lands in 1722 to the Winkler von Mohrenfels family. Wolfgang Christoph Winkler von Mohrenfels, ennobled by Emperor Joseph I in 1709, continued the construction. He transformed the property into a family fideicommissum, whose charter was created in 1723 and received imperial confirmation in 1731. Under his son Georg Christoph, the castle and its outbuildings achieved their present size.
