Herblingen Castle

To be privately owned

Herblingen Castle, originally a fortress built in the 13th century, is situated at an elevation of approximately 525 meters above sea level in the municipality of Stetten in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Today, it is characterized by its castle-like appearance, which is the result of later renovations.

History+

The origins of Herblingen Castle date back to the early 13th century, when it was presumably built by the Lords of Herblingen. In 1281, Konrad von Herblingen rebuilt the castle chapel, which was subsequently consecrated. In the early 14th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Dukes of Austria, who later pledged it to the Truchsesses of Diessenhofen. In 1469, the Schaffhausen patrician Adam Cron acquired the complex, which, after further changes of ownership, was finally purchased by the city of Schaffhausen in 1534. Despite the Reformation, Catholic mass continued to be celebrated in the castle chapel. Between 1566 and 1733, the castle served as the seat of the Reiat bailiwick. Extensive renovations to transform it into a castle began in 1733 by bank director Johann Wilhelm Gestefeld, who had the medieval fortifications removed. After his bankruptcy in 1779, the property changed hands multiple times.
