To be privately owned

In the middle of the 16th century, Count Poppo XII of Henneberg had a Renaissance-style residential castle built on the grounds of the former monastery. With the death of the Count in 1574, the Henneberg line died out, and the Landgraves of Hesse became owners of the castle and basilica. These were set on fire by Swedish troops in 1640, during the Thirty Years' War. The Landgravine arranged for a partial reconstruction. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle served as a judicial office, prison, and rent office.

Parts of the former monastery wall and large estate buildings have been preserved. The association "Das Aktivmuseum - ländliches Brauchtum" (The Active Museum - Rural Customs), which operates in rooms of the castle, which has been privately owned since 2007, has created a well-maintained herb garden.
