Herrenhausen Castle

The palace's origins date back to 1640, when a Welf estate was gradually converted into a pleasure house. Around 1670, the complex took on its characteristic three-wing form. Under Duke Johann Friedrich, a decisive expansion into a summer palace began in 1676, with the residential wing extended and lavishly furnished. The central hall above the passage became the focal point of courtly life. Between approximately 1704 and 1706, under Elector Georg Ludwig, the palace received a contemporary, Italian-inspired appearance. Later, from 1818, court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves redesigned the palace in a Neoclassical style, giving it a rusticated plaster facade and emphasizing the central axes. This form, shaped by Laves, remained until the palace's destruction during an air raid in October 1943. After the war, various plans for the site emerged until the Volkswagen Foundation funded the reconstruction of the Neoclassical facade. In January 2013, the reconstructed palace opened as a conference center.

Herrenhausen Palace is situated in the Herrenhausen district of the Hanover Region in Lower Saxony, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 42 meters above sea level.

Today, Herrenhausen Palace houses a versatile conference center primarily used for scientific events. The basement features a lecture hall with around 270 seats, while the upper floor offers a ballroom for up to 700 people. The facade has been meticulously reconstructed according to Laves' plans.
