Herringhausen Castle
Herringhausen Castle is a moated castle in Herringhausen, southwest of Lippstadt in North Rhine-Westphalia. The existing complex was built between 1720 and 1730 in the Baroque style.
The Herringhausen manor originated in the 16th century. The first owner was Rembert von Schorlemer from the Westphalian noble family Schorlemer. Leopold Anton Wilhelm von Schorlemer began expanding it into a representative castle complex in 1720. Plans by the architect Justus Wehmer from Hildesheim were probably used as a basis. The actual execution was initially in the hands of the stonemason Bartholomäus Rabaliatti and from 1722 with Valentin Springer from Tyrol. After Schorlemer's death, his son Joseph Clemens von Schorlemer continued the construction work.
Complex+
A two-story manor house with a mansard roof, gabled central risalits, and a double-flight outdoor staircase was built. Inside are valuable stucco ceilings and a library. The outbuildings are symmetrically arranged to the manor house. Two pavilions are located in front to the south. The complex is completed by a gatehouse. Parts of the complex are enclosed by a moat. However, most of the moat has now been filled in.
Usage+
The most famous resident of the castle in the 19th century was Burghard von Schorlemer-Alst. The castle is still owned by the Barons von Schorlemer. The estate is used for agriculture. The estate includes 350 hectares of land.
