Herten Castle, a moated castle, is on the western edge of Herten's city center in the Recklinghausen district. The complex, with its late Gothic architecture, is within a historic English landscape garden.

History+

The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1376. The current buildings were constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries by the master builders Henrik de Suyr and his son Johann for the Stecke and Nesselrode families. After World War I, the main building was abandoned as a residence, fell into disrepair, and was threatened with collapse due to mining damage. Extensive renovation by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe between 1974 and 1989 saved the complex from complete ruin.
