The Herzogskasten in Ingolstadt, also known as the Old Castle, is a Gothic structure from the 13th century and is considered the oldest surviving non-ecclesiastical building in the city. Originally built as a palatinate, it now houses the city library.

History+

The construction of the Herzogskasten took place around 1255, commissioned by Louis the Strict. The building initially served as a ducal residence for the dukes of Ingolstadt until the New Castle was completed in the 15th century. As part of the first city wall at the southeastern end, it provided additional fortification.
