Heuckewalde Castle

The origins of Heuckewalde Castle presumably date back to 1152, when it was owned by the Posa Monastery in Zeitz. At that time, the construction of a keep laid the foundation for a castle-like complex. The defensive tower, built in the 12th century and later supplemented with an extension, now 42 meters high, was once a moated castle, surrounded by swamps and water. The first documentary mention occurred in 1318 in a settlement concerning ownership between Landgrave Friedrich I and Bishop Heinrich of Naumburg-Zeitz. In the 14th century, the castle served the Naumburg bishops as a hunting and pleasure residence before it was sold and used as a residential complex.
