Hexenagger Castle, a Baroque castle, is situated on a mountain spur above the Bavarian village of Hexenagger. It is located in the Schambach Valley, a side valley of the Altmühl, near Altmannstein.

History+

The origins of Hexenagger Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when the Lords of Hexenagger built a castle here, documented between 928 and 1480. In 1485, ownership passed to the Helfenstein family through marriage. They sold the fortress in 1528 to Duke Wilhelm of Bavaria, who in turn granted it as a fief to the Muggenthalers. After the castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt as a Baroque palace, including a chapel, by the Muggenthalers between 1625 and 1629. When the Hexenagger line of the Muggenthalers died out, the castle was sold in 1724 to the Bavarian Elector Karl Albrecht.
