West of Sankt Michael im Lavanttal in the municipality of Wolfsberg, Himmelau Castle, a former late Gothic moated castle, rises. Since the early 20th century, it has served as a monastery and houses the Discalced Carmelites.

History+

The origins of the estate date back to 1289, when a tower in St. Michael, owned by the Weissenegger family, was first documented. In 1331, the complex passed to the Diocese of Lavant, and in the 15th century, it was owned by the Himmelberg family. The expansion into a castle began before 1491, likely around 1476 under Heinrich von Himmelberg. Further development took place in the 16th century. Between 1581 and 1628, the castle belonged to the Kronegg family before passing through various owners. In 1988, the granary was converted.
