Himmelberg Castle, a Baroque castle in Metten, Lower Bavaria, once served as a summer residence for the abbots of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael. Its architecture and interior are an example of 18th-century building art in the region.

History+

The current castle complex was built in 1757 under Abbot Adalbert Tobiaschu of Metten. The building was designed by lay brother Albert Schöttl to replace an older summer house. The eastern wing of the building houses a two-story chapel, while the west side features utility rooms on the ground floor and a large hall and cabinet above. After secularization, the castle was initially assigned as a residence to the last abbot of Metten, Cölestin Stöckl, who soon returned to the abbey. Later, the castle passed into the possession of Johann von Pronath before being repurchased by the re-established Metten Abbey. Renovation and restoration took place in 1984/85.
