Hinnenburg Castle (Brakel)

The first documented mention of Hinnenburg dates back to 1237, when it served as the residence of Knight Berthold von Brakel. Through inheritance, the estate later came into the possession of the Asseburg and von Bocholtz families. Around 1600, a three-winged Renaissance building was constructed, which was supplemented by a castle chapel around 1658. In the 18th century, the castle underwent a Baroque-style expansion under the Electorate of Cologne minister Hermann Werner von der Asseburg. Fires in 1910 and 1934 destroyed large parts of the outbuildings. Wilhelm Anton von der Asseburg, later Prince-Bishop of Paderborn, was born here in 1707.
