Hinnenburg Castle (Brakel)
Castle Description+
The three-story building features a tower oriented towards the south.
A special feature are the valuable stucco works still preserved inside, as well as the famous Asseburg Archive, which is not publicly accessible.
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1237. At that time, it served as the residence of Knight Berthold von Brakel.
The property later passed by inheritance to the Asseburg and von Bocholtz families.
The three-winged Renaissance building was originally constructed around 1600. Around 1658, the castle was expanded to include the castle chapel. Further expansion in the Baroque style took place in the 18th century under the Elector of Cologne's minister Hermann Werner von der Asseburg.
Current Use+
The castle is still privately owned by the Asseburg family and therefore cannot be visited. Only hiking trails laid out around the castle complex can be used publicly.
Special Events+
A fire on December 19, 1910, largely destroyed the outbuildings at Hinnenburg. On November 15, 1934, another devastating fire occurred at the castle.
Personalities+
Wilhelm Anton von der Asseburg, 52nd Prince-Bishop of the Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn, was born at Hinnenburg Castle on February 16, 1707.
