Hirschbach Castle

Knight Otto Toplarius von Hirschbach and his brother Heinrich appear as witnesses in a document from 1280. This also confirms the existence of a small fortified building. The "Veste Hirspach" is mentioned for the first time in 1385.

It remained with the Toppler family until 1470. Then Heinrich Streun took over the property. From 1580, Gabriel Streun von Schwarzenau began to erect a magnificent Renaissance castle with octagonal towers in place of the old castle. At that time, the old castle chapel was converted into a Protestant castle church. In 1612, Ulrich Christoph zu Scherffenberg acquired the dominion. Unfortunately, he could not enjoy his property for long, because during the Thirty Years' War, his castle was conquered and plundered by imperial mercenary troops in 1619.

Seven years later, Scherffenberg sold Hirschbach to Johann Friedrich Freiherr von Herberstein. In 1760, Count Julius von Veterani came into possession of the dominion. He allowed the castle, which had lost its administrative function, to fall into disrepair. By 1783, it was already uninhabited. The towers and the second floor were demolished, as were the bastions. The material was used to fill the castle courtyard. The remaining castle buildings were sold in 1843 to sixteen private interested parties, who set up their residences there.
