Hirschberg Castle
Hirschberg Castle is a Baroque building in Hirschberg (Saale), Saale-Orla-Kreis, Thuringia.
The building was constructed in 1678 in the Baroque style. However, its history goes back further: already in 1296 it was an Imperial fief, and in 1397 a Bohemian fief. In 1652, it became a Reuss fief.
Heinrich X Reuss zu Lobenstein (1621–1671) purchased the castle in 1664. From 1678, his son Count Heinrich VIII Reuss zu Hirschberg (1652–1711) resided and ruled here until his death in 1711. He initiated the new construction of the castle that still stands today. Later, the castle served as a summer residence.
In 1920, the state of Thuringia took over ownership. Since then, it has primarily been used for residential purposes.
The castle is located on a rocky outcrop, offering a view of the town of Hirschberg.
