Hirschberg Castle

On Lake Haarsee in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau is Hirschberg Castle, a building in the Art Nouveau Baroque style. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century as a family residence and is now privately owned.

History+

The castle was constructed between 1907 and 1909 according to designs by Carl Hocheder for the von Hirschberg family. The foundation stone was laid on August 18, 1907, after Karl Rudolf von Hirschberg and his wife Friederike Albertine Sophie von Faber acquired properties in the region in 1906. The estate, which cost around one million gold marks, was equipped with central heating, an elevator, and a swimming pool. From 1923, the family encountered financial difficulties and leased the castle to the Berlin banking family von Bleichröder. After the death of Karl Rudolf von Hirschberg in 1927, his widow moved back into a part of the castle in 1933. During World War II, the castle was confiscated by the Reich Foreign Ministry and used as a guesthouse, bearing the code name Waldbichl.
