Hirschbrunn Castle

Hirschbrunn Castle is a three-story, towering gabled building with rectangular corner towers. It is located in Dornstadt, a district of Auhausen in the Donau-Ries district.

Construction of the current hunting lodge began around 1600. The clients were Count Gottfried von Oettingen-Oettingen and Count Wilhelm II von Oettingen-Wallerstein, and the master builders were Peter and Hans Alberthal. After the Battle of Nördlingen in 1634, the castle was repeatedly plundered by scattered soldiers. The last prince of the Protestant Oettingen-Oettingen line sold the castle to Count Franz Albrecht zu Oettingen-Spielberg towards the end of the 17th century. The new castle owner immediately had the castle expanded and the Marienkapelle (St. Mary's Chapel) built in 1692. The patron's box in the church is accessible from the castle via a connecting corridor. From about 1700 to 1846, the village children were taught in the castle. After the Second World War, it served as a storage room. In 1978, the building, which had survived many earthquakes unscathed over the years, was extensively renovated.

Hirschbrunn Castle is owned by the Oettingen-Spielberg family and is not accessible to the public. Only the castle chapel can be visited.
