Hirschstein Castle

As early as 1205, a castle complex was mentioned at this location, with its origins dating back to the 10th century. The term “castle” first appeared in connection with the complex in 1497, and in 1551, a document mentions the name “Nau Hirstein”. Ownership changed hands frequently, including many nobles of the Dresden court. Around 1590, Hartmann Pistoris acquired the castle, which remained in the possession of the Pistoris family until Johann Ernst Pistoris. In the 17th century, the complex was expanded, and a settlement, which adopted the name Hirschstein, emerged. The castle developed into a feudal estate, whose residents from surrounding villages had to perform corvée labor. Max Crusius, a hussar captain from Großenhain, bought the castle in 1892 and had it modernized in 1893/94. After his death in 1907, his widow lived in the castle.
