Hochaltingen Castle

The main structure of the castle was built in 1551 by the Lords of Hürnheim, who had retreated here after losing their former position to the Counts of Oettingen. In 1585, ownership passed to the Barons of Welden through Cordula von Hürnheim, who renovated the castle. In 1764, the Welden family sold the castle to the House of Oettingen-Spielberg, which used it as a summer residence until 1899. Between 1853 and 1859, the castle underwent a redesign, during which the large castle hall received a frieze of nearly two hundred coats of arms of Oettingen liege lords, as well as a stucco ceiling depicting the four seasons.
