Höhenrain Castle

The origins of Hohenrain Castle date back to around 1000 AD, when it was owned by the Knights of Hohenrain. It was first mentioned in a document in 1133. In 1483, Georg von Hohenrain inherited the Imperial Lordship of Waldeck, but he died in 1487 as the last of his lineage. In 1536, the castle passed to Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria. Just eight years later, in 1544, the Lords of Taufkirchen took over the estate and had it rebuilt. They held the property until 1683. Subsequently, numerous changes of ownership followed, including Johann Georg Messerer (1720–1743), the Nobles von Kern, the Counts Khuen von Belasy, and the Counts Arco-Zinneberg (1743–1822).
