Höhnscheid Castle

The origins of Höhnscheid date back to 1208, when the brothers Volkwin IV of Schwalenberg and Adolf I of Waldeck began constructing the first monastery buildings. A documented mention as a donation to Corvey Abbey occurred in 1230, followed by the founding of an Augustinian nunnery in 1235, which was subordinate to Aroldessen Abbey. In 1468, Count Otto IV of Waldeck zu Landau expelled the nuns and handed the monastery over to the canons of the Order of the Holy Cross. The Reformation led to the dissolution of the monastery in 1527 by Count Philipp IV of Waldeck, who had it renovated and used as a comital demesne. An attempt to operate it again as a monastery in 1630 failed. Prince Friedrich Anton Ulrich sold the estate in 1720 to Colonel Johann Wilhelm von Leliwa.
