Höpfigheim Castle

The origins of the complex date back to the High Middle Ages, with its first documented mention in 1339. Five years later, in 1344, it was owned by Walter von Ebersbach, who held it as a fief from the Counts of Vaihingen. Subsequently, Höpfigheim belonged to various noble families, including the Lords of Mönsheim, Urach, and Bernhausen, before passing to the Speth family in 1486. A turning point occurred in 1587 when Duke Ludwig of Württemberg acquired the complex and enfeoffed his privy councilor Melchior Jäger von Gärtringen with it. In the 1580s and 1590s, he commissioned master builder Georg Beer for renovations that shaped the castle's appearance and, among other things, renewed its defenses. In 1754, a stone bridge replaced the original drawbridge. After the fief was returned to Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg in 1687, the castle temporarily served as a residence for Crown Prince Friedrich Ludwig and later as the seat of local administrative officials. The municipality of Höpfigheim acquired the castle in 1817 and subsequently used it as a school and town hall. The main building served as the town hall until 1973, and a renovation took place in 2005.
