Hörningsholm Castle

Hörningsholm Castle stands on the northern part of the Mörkö island in the Swedish Södertälje municipality. The castle sits on a hill with a great view over the Baltic Sea bay leading towards Södertälje.

This strategic location was the reason that the place already in 13th Century was secured. As the origin of the castle is the property Symondöö, the aristocratic Folkunga that was on a small offshore island, which together grew due to the land uplift with Mörkö. 1308 belonged to the manor Duke Erik Magnusson and then it moved through sale and inheritance between various noble families, such as Örnfot, Sture and Gyllenstierna. An agricultural directory of 1498 is pointed out that the mansion has received the new name Hörningsholm. In the late 16th or early 17 -Century of Reichsmarschall Svante Sture the Younger, the castle. 1719 Castle Hörningsholm was burned down by Russian troops.

The present castle was built in the mid 18th Century under provincial chairman Nils Bonde af Björnö drawings by Carl Hårleman. It was after a fire at Renovated in 18. February 1950. Hörningsholm Castle is privately owned.
