Hof Castle (Mollis)

The creation of Hof Castle is closely linked to the Schindler family. Konrad Schindler, who had already completed the magnificent Haltli Castle, received the commission from his younger brother Kaspar Schindler, a prominent Glarus politician, to build this estate. Kaspar desired a house that was elegant and modern inside, but presented an unobtrusive and simple appearance externally. The same architect who had just completed an opulent Baroque building created a completely new type of house here, impressively demonstrating the fluent transition from the fading Baroque to the emerging Classicism, later known as the Empire style. The estate, surrounded by extensive grounds with ornamental and utility gardens, fountains, and outbuildings, remained in family ownership for over 180 years and underwent no significant alterations, thus preserving its original character.

Hof Castle is situated in Mollis, a municipality in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 445 m above sea level.

Today, the historic Hof Castle serves as a retirement home. It is a well-preserved architectural testament to its period of origin, offering its residents a stylish ambiance.
