Hofeck Castle

The origins of Hofeck Castle date back to 1238, when the Vogt of Weida had a fortified complex built here to protect his possessions and appointed a knight Murring as administrator. The Murring family shaped the place until the early 15th century, which is why the complex was also known as Murringhof. With a battlements wall, Hofeck also had an outwork. Ownership changed frequently, including noble families such as the von Aufseß, Waldenfels, von der Grün, Kotzau, Redwitz, and Geilsdorf. After the fief reverted to Margrave Christian of Bayreuth in 1618, ownership passed to Landeshauptmann Heinrich Reuß II in 1620. Further local noble families followed, such as the Dobeneck and Lüchau.
