Hohenaltheim Castle

Originally, a smaller moated castle stood on the site of the current castle. This was demolished in 1710 to make way for a grand Baroque new building. Prince Albrecht Ernst II of Oettingen-Wallerstein commissioned the construction, which spanned approximately two decades. Wilhelm Heinrich Behringer, who served as building director from 1700 to 1712, presumably designed most of the plans. The Prince placed great importance on a rapid realization of his ideas, which, due to limited financial resources, often led to compromises in material quality. As a result, even after 1711, craftsmen were continuously occupied with additions, replacements, and alterations for over twenty years.
