Hohendorf Castle

Hohendorf Castle is a Neo-Gothic manor house in Hohendorf near Groß Mohrdorf, 15 km north of Stralsund in North Western Pomerania. The former noble seat of the Counts of Klot-Trautvetter was last renovated in 1993.

Hohendorf was the manorial seat of the majorate of the same name, which was founded in 1733 by Johann Reinhold von Trautvetter. Through inheritance, it passed to his nephew Wilhelm Reinhold Freiherr von Klot, who added the name and coat of arms of the Trautvetters to his title.

The castle was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the historicizing Gothic style for Ernst Malte Freiherr von Klot-Trautvetter and built after his death by Friedrich Hitzig in 1854. According to other sources, the castle was built either in 1840 or in the years 1858 and 1859 on the foundations of the previous manor house. The estate included seven properties and about 2500 hectares of land.

In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. The castle was plundered and the interior destroyed. This was followed by the destruction of the keep during the GDR era. The rest of the castle was used as a retirement home during this time. After reunification, Hubertus Graf von Klot-Trautvetter returned to the castle and bought it from the municipal administration for one German Mark. Renovation began immediately thereafter and was completed in 1993.

In 2011, a Lübeck resident acquired the castle for 700,000 Euros at a compulsory auction. The company Rosehr-Projekte is converting the former castle hotel into a residential building with 33 apartments between 22 and 74 m². In addition, an event hall and a bar are to be created. In cooperation with the gifted education program of the University of Rostock, classical music concerts are to be held at the castle.
