Hohenkammer Castle

Hohenkammer Castle is a listed castle in Hohenkammer in the district of Freising. It is a four-winged complex with an arcaded inner courtyard, four bay-like corner towers, and a square gate tower. As a Hofmark castle, it was the manorial seat of the Hofmark Hohenkammer.

The founders of Hohenkammer Castle were the Lords of Camer in the 11th century, who settled in Hohenkammer in 1042. The closed Hofmark Hohenkammer was owned by the Counts of Haslang since 1551. The current castle building dates only from the 15th century and was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in 1648 after a devastating fire. From 1804 to 1821, the castle was owned by the Counts Preysing and then passed to the publisher Johann Friedrich Freiherr von Cotta. Since 1833, it was owned by the von Vequel-Westernach family. Mechthilde Freiin von Vequel-Westernach moved into a small villa nearby and sold the castle in 1917 to the Raiffeisen Cooperative. After varied use, it became a training center for the Bayerische Raiffeisen-Zentralbank (later DZ Bank) in 1970. The castle and Villa Baroness have been owned by Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft since 2003, which also operates a hotel and training center with gastronomy through the newly founded Schloss Hohenkammer GmbH. In 2007, the grounds were completely renovated and renewed from the ground up. One user is the Münchener Rück Foundation.
