Hohenlupfen Castle, in Stühlingen in the Waldshut district, Baden-Württemberg, is an example of the transformation of a fortified castle into a residence. It acquired its current form in the early 17th century and has since shaped the landscape above the Wutach Valley.

History+

The site's origins may date back to Roman times, when a signal tower might have stood on the plateau. The Hohenlupfen fortress was built by the Counts of Lupfen and first documented in 1093. During the Swiss War of 1499, the castle suffered damage from the Confederates. The subsequent reconstruction was only makeshift, as the then Landgrave resided in Engen and did not need the castle in Stühlingen. After the Pappenheimers received the Landgraviate of Stühlingen as a fief, a renovation of the castle into its current form took place between 1620 and 1624 under Maximilian I.
