The historic structure Hohenroden Castle, once also known as Burgstall Schneggenroden, is located in Essingen in the Ostalb district at an elevation of approximately 526 meters above sea level.

History+

The first documented mention of the complex, then known as Schneggenroden Castle, dates to 1293. Ernfried von Roden is named as its builder. In 1362, Ulrich von Roden, also known as Sneggenroden, sold the castle for 590 pounds Heller to Friedrich von Westerstetten, called Schauche. His son, Hans von Westerstetten, sold the property in 1401 to Georg I. von Woellwarth.
