History+
The origins of the castle date back to the 12th century, when it was first mentioned as Schwanstein Castle and served as the seat of the nobles of Schwangau. The property changed hands multiple times, fell into disrepair, and was rebuilt. In 1832, Crown Prince Maximilian, later King Maximilian II, acquired the ruined castle. He commissioned the painter Domenico Quaglio to rebuild it in the Neo-Gothic style, a project that lasted until 1837. After Quaglio's death, Joseph Daniel Ohlmüller continued the work. In the early 19th century, the names of Schwanstein Castle and the double castle Vorder- and Hinterhohenschwangau were swapped, leading to the current designation.
