The castle's origins date back to 1549, when its hedge garden was first documented. The castle underwent two renovations in the 16th and 17th centuries before achieving its current Baroque form around 1760. The Hohenstadt Castle and Pilgrimage Church was constructed under Wilhelm Adelmann in just four years, from 1707 to 1711, and is considered an example of Vorarlberg Baroque architecture.
