Hohenstadt Castle

Hohenstadt Castle and its church are situated high above the Kocher Valley and form an architectural unit.

Hohenstadt Castle, belonging to the Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden family, received its current Baroque form around 1760 after two renovations in the 16th and 17th centuries. It features free-standing staircases on its floors with unusually shallow steps, a special type of staircase found elsewhere only in the Würzburg Residence. The building is privately owned and generally not open to visitors; however, during the Patricius Festival in March, visitors are sometimes granted access to the castle's interiors. The building served as a backdrop and filming location for the German film production "The Red Baron."

Under Wilhelm Adelmann, the Hohenstadt Castle and Pilgrimage Church was built in just four years, from 1707 to 1711. It is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the "Vorarlberg Baroque" style.

The hedge garden of Count Adelmann's Hohenstadt Castle is located a few steps north of the castle and is one of the oldest gardens of its kind in Europe. Its first mention dates back to 1549. In 1756, it was redesigned in the French style. The pleasure house in the garden, a two-story "garden house," was built in 1760. The entire complex has been a protected monument since 1982 and is publicly accessible.
