Holdenstedt Castle

Holdenstedt was first mentioned in a document in 1061. In 1191, a manor of the Lords of Holdenstede is mentioned. In 1342, the "slot tho Holdenstede" is named in a document of the Dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. In 1572, the moated castle was owned by Agnes von Thale, who married Heinrich von Wense. The old moated castle was demolished between 1572 and 1585 and rebuilt in the Renaissance style in 1585. In 1636, Swedish troops camped in the castle and devastated the complex. In 1693, the complex had to be demolished due to dilapidation. From 1701 to 1709, the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style. From 1837 to 1841, the castle was renovated with a neoclassical facade. Since 1983, the city of Uelzen has been the owner of the castle.
