Hollwinkel Castle (Hedem)

The founding of Hollwinkel Castle is presumed to have occurred at the end of the 13th century, possibly by the Holle family. From the early 15th century, it was owned by the von Schloen gen. Gehle family. In 1459, the castle was besieged and bombarded during a feud between Minden and Osnabrück, with stone cannonballs later found as evidence of this conflict. During the Thirty Years' War, Hollwinkel also experienced a siege by Swedish troops. After the extinction of the von Gehle family in 1758, the fief reverted to Frederick II of Prussia, who initially transferred it to Baron von Asseburg and later to the Prussian Minister of State, Baron von der Horst.
