Holzberg Castle

Holzberghof Hunting Lodge is located on the formerly wooded Holzberg near Bischofsheim. In the 16th century, the Barons of Thüngen built an ironworks there, where iron ore was processed into cast iron. Mule breeding was also carried out on the Holzberg. The oldest part of the castle, the so-called Forester's House, was built in 1614 by the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn. His coat of arms can be seen above the door.

A "Romanesque" building from the 19th century

In the following centuries, the castle came into the possession of various noble families, including the Barons of Thüngen and von Gebsattel. In the 19th century, the estate was a Würzburg foal stable before it passed back to the von Gebsattel family and then to Count Schimmelmann. The current castle was added by Countess Schimmelmann in 1910 - as a copy of the Danish moated castle Frederikstein. Its Romanesque style makes the building appear much older.

Inn with a rustic atmosphere

Today, Holzberghof Castle houses a restaurant and guest rooms. Holiday apartments are also rented out. The hunting lodge has a total of 34 rooms, where the feeling of life from bygone times is still palpable. Of the formerly four towers, three have been preserved. Oil lamps and candlelight create a rustic atmosphere when dining and in the rooms, and at the same time represent a clever problem solution. Due to its secluded location, the building is not connected to the electricity grid.
