Holzhof Castle (Emmen)

To be privately owned

Holzhof Castle, an imposing manor house, is located in Emmen in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. This historic building is a defining element of regional architecture and bears witness to a long history dating back to the Middle Ages.

History+

The first documented mention of the area “uf em holtz” dates back to 1330. In 1423, the affiliation of Holzhof with Emmen was confirmed after the Rothenburgers had asserted claims. Between the mid-16th and early 17th centuries, the von Sonnenberg family resided here, followed by the am Rhyn family from Lucerne from the mid-17th to mid-18th centuries. The Lords of Sonnenberg had the current Holzhof Castle built in 1758. From 1766 to 1808, it was owned by the Schwytzer von Buonas family. In 1846, Anton Philipp von Segesser, a significant political figure, moved in. From 1906, the Niederberger family took over Holzhof, which was then in a poor state. Over generations, the estate was lovingly restored by the Niederberger family and brought back to its current splendor.
