Hopferau Castle

Hopferau Castle is a three-story building with a gabled roof and a three-story extension with a hip roof in the Neo-Gothic style. It is located in the holiday resort of Hopferau in the district of Ostallgäu.

The origins of the oldest castle in the Ostallgäu district date back to 1468, when Knight Siegmund-Friedrich von Freyberg zu Eisenberg had the building constructed. The three-story residential building was the center of a small new lordship that arose from an inheritance division.

From 1830 to 1840, the castle was rebuilt. A wing was added to the east front, and it received a Neo-Gothic facade. The builder was Domenico Quaglio.

Hopferau Castle was owned by the Barons von Ponickau from 1846 to 1910. Subsequently, the ownership changed several times until the estate was transferred to the Kultur-Stiftung Füssen e.V. in 1999 to ensure its long-term preservation. Today, the castle, surrounded by a walled park, houses a restaurant and a conference and event center. The so-called Staircase Concerts for friends of classical music are now very popular, far beyond the Ostallgäu district. Furthermore, Hopferau Castle houses a collection of facsimiles.
