Horben Castle

To be privately owned

Horben Castle is a charming property in the Swiss canton of Aargau, which once served as a summer residence for the monks of Muri Monastery. It is perched on the Horben plateau and is now a cultural asset of national importance, known for its valuable wallpaper paintings by Caspar Wolf.

History+

As early as the 12th century, Muri Monastery owned land and a dairy farm in this area. At the beginning of the 18th century, specifically in 1700/1701, Abbot Plazidus Zurlauben commissioned the construction of a recreational home for the Benedictine monks. The master builders were Hans Rey and Hans Mäder. In 1730, the neighboring castle chapel was built at the behest of Prince-Abbot Gerold Haimb. The castle underwent its first expansion in 1739 and received a fountain in 1743. It acquired its current Baroque form between 1762 and 1764 under Prince-Abbot Bonaventura Bucher. During this period, the famous wallpaper paintings by Caspar Wolf were created in the abbot's and hunting rooms. After the monastery's dissolution in 1841, the castle passed into private ownership and was used for various purposes, including as an inn and a sanatorium. Since 1913, it has been owned by the Borsinger family, who had it restored.
