Horn Castle

The history of the building, now known as "Schloss Welfenstein," dates back to the 12th century. Originally, a medieval fortress stood on this site, strategically located on a hill overlooking the river Welf. Little is known about its early inhabitants, but archaeological findings suggest a succession of noble families who continuously expanded and fortified the structure.

By the 16th century, the fortress had lost much of its military significance but gained importance as an administrative center for the surrounding region. It was during this period that the first major transformations began, slowly converting the austere fortress into a more comfortable residence. However, it was the reign of Duke Leopold I in the 18th century that truly marked a turning point.

Duke Leopold I, a great admirer of French architecture and the arts, envisioned a grand baroque palace that would reflect his power and prestige. He commissioned the renowned architect Johann Balthasar Neumann to design the new Schloss. Construction began in 1750 and was completed in 1762, resulting in the magnificent structure we see today.

Neumann's design incorporated elements of both French and Italian baroque, characterized by its symmetrical facades, elaborate stucco work, and impressive frescoes. The interior was equally opulent, featuring grand ballrooms, richly decorated salons, and a stunning chapel. The Schloss quickly became a center of culture and courtly life, hosting lavish parties and attracting artists and musicians from all over Europe.

The 19th and early 20th centuries brought significant challenges to Schloss Welfenstein. During the Napoleonic Wars, it was briefly occupied by French troops, and later, in the World Wars, it suffered minor damages. After World War II, the Schloss served various purposes, including a temporary hospital and a refugee center, which led to some alterations of its original interior.

A devastating fire in 1981 severely damaged large parts of the Schloss, particularly the roof and the upper floors. This tragic event, however, also marked the beginning of a new era for the historic building. An extensive renovation project was launched, aiming to restore the Schloss to its former glory while integrating modern infrastructure.

The Renovation Project: A Commitment to Heritage

The renovation, which lasted for over a decade, involved a team of expert restorers, art historians, and architects. Great care was taken to preserve original elements wherever possible and to reconstruct damaged parts using traditional techniques and materials. The frescoes were meticulously restored, the stucco work painstakingly repaired, and the historic gardens carefully replanted.

Today, Schloss Welfenstein stands as a testament to centuries of history, resilience, and architectural brilliance. It now houses a museum, open to the public, showcasing its rich past and impressive art collection. It also serves as a venue for cultural events, concerts, and conferences, ensuring its continued vibrancy and relevance in the modern world.

The castle was built in 1750-62 and renovated after a fire in 1981.
