Horr Castle (Neukirchen)

The name Haus Horr derives from Horo (swamp), like the places Kerpen-Horrem, Dormagen-Horrem or Orr. Haus Horr is a former noble residence, which was rebuilt in 1738 at the instigation of Baron von Francken as a Maison de plaisance. The manor house is connected by an avenue, which still exists, to a castle chapel dedicated to Saint John Nepomuk. The manor house is a two-story plastered building with a mansard roof. The courtyard side with five window axes is characterized by a single-axis central risalit, and the seven-axis courtyard side by a three-sided risalit. Both risalits are highlighted by their own roof structures. Windows and doors are framed with gray natural stone surrounds. The castle park has been leveled. The still existing plan shows, among other things, a gondola shed, a bowling alley, a hut from Tahiti, and a Chinese pagoda.

The manor house is attributed to the architect Michel Leveilly and is a simplified repetition of Falkenlust Palace near Brühl, where Leveilly was construction manager under François de Cuvilliés the Elder, which belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Augustusburg Brühl". Leveilly also designed Arff Palace in the Cologne district of Roggendorf/Thenhoven and the historic town hall of the city of Bonn.
