Horst Castle

The origins of Schloss Horst date back to the 11th century, when a farmstead existed on this site. Over time, this developed into a castle complex, which was twice destroyed by fires. After the second fire in the 16th century, the then-owner Rütger von der Horst decided on a complete new construction. This was completed in 1578 and was characterized by high-quality architectural sculptures, which gave the castle supra-regional art-historical significance. In the 19th century, the castle gradually fell into disrepair; large parts collapsed or had to be demolished. The von Fürstenberg family, the then-owners, rescued valuable facade ornament fragments, known as the “Stone Treasure.” A citizens' initiative began advocating for its preservation in 1985. The city of Gelsenkirchen acquired the castle and initiated extensive restoration and reconstruction measures, making it one of the best-researched Renaissance buildings in Northwest Germany.

Schloss Horst is located in the Horst district of Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 25 meters above sea level.

Today, Schloss Horst houses a museum. It has been restored and partially rebuilt, allowing visitors to explore the historical architecture and exhibitions.
