Horst Castle
Schloss Horst in Gelsenkirchen-Horst is a Renaissance building in Westphalia. It is considered one of the oldest and most important of its kind, and its architecture shaped the style of the Lippe Renaissance, also known as the “Horster Bauschule.”
History+
The origins of Schloss Horst date back to the 11th century, when a farmstead existed on this site. This developed into a castle complex, which was twice destroyed by fires. After the second fire in the 16th century, the then-owner Rütger von der Horst decided on a complete new construction. This was completed in 1578 and was characterized by high-quality architectural sculptures, which gave the castle supra-regional art-historical significance. In the 19th century, the castle fell into disrepair; large parts collapsed or had to be demolished. The von Fürstenberg family, the then-owners, rescued valuable facade ornament fragments, known as the “Stone Treasure.” A citizens' initiative began advocating for its preservation in 1985. The city of Gelsenkirchen acquired the castle and initiated extensive restoration and reconstruction measures, making it one of the best-researched Renaissance buildings in Northwest Germany.
