Horst Castle (Mönchengladbach)

Haus Horst is a water castle in the Giesenkirchen district of Mönchengladbach. It is considered the ancestral seat of the Lords of Horst. It was largely renovated in 1853. Since 1988, the building has housed a private clinic for psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychosomatics.

Early Beginnings and Medieval Period

The origins of Haus Horst date back to the 12th century, with the first documented mention in 1220. Initially, it served as a fortified noble residence, strategically located amidst moats and defensive walls. Over the centuries, the castle underwent various architectural changes, reflecting the prevailing styles of each era. The original Romanesque elements were gradually complemented by Gothic and Renaissance additions.

The Lords of Horst and Their Influence

The Lords of Horst were a prominent noble family in the region, playing a significant role in local politics and society. Their lineage can be traced back to the early medieval period, and they held considerable land and influence. The castle served not only as their residence but also as an administrative center for their estates. Their coat of arms, featuring a rampant lion, is still visible in various parts of the castle.

19th Century Renovations and Modern Use

The extensive renovation in 1853 transformed Haus Horst into its current appearance. While preserving its historic charm, the renovations incorporated elements of neo-Gothic architecture, adding turrets, battlements, and ornate facades. The interior was also modernized, with spacious rooms and grand halls. Today, the castle's conversion into a private clinic has given it a new purpose, combining its rich history with modern healthcare services.
