Hovestadt Castle in Lippetal, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a moated castle whose origins trace back to a medieval knight's seat. The current complex stands as an example of Lippe Renaissance architecture, complemented by Baroque elements.

History+

The first documented mention of a knight's seat in Hovestadt dates to 1152. Commissioned by the Archbishops of Cologne, a castle was built here to secure an important crossing of the Lippe river. This fortification, completed around 1276, served to protect against the Bishops of Münster as well as the Counties of Arnsberg and Mark. Despite multiple destructions, for instance in 1303 and 1346, the castle was always rebuilt. During the Soest Feud (1444–1449), it played a strategic role. In 1483, the property came into the possession of the Ketteler family. Goswin von Ketteler had the castle transformed into a Lippe Renaissance-style palace between 1563 and 1572.
