Hoya Castle is located in the town of Hoya in the Nienburg district, Lower Saxony. The complex, once a medieval castle, is situated on the eastern bank of the Weser River and now serves as the seat of local authorities.

History+

The origins of Hoya Castle date back to its first documented mention as a castle in 1233. Originally located on an island in the Weser, which was only connected to the mainland at the end of the 17th century, it served as the residence of the Counts of Hoya for the lower county until 1503. After the extinction of this line, Nienburg became the main seat of the Counts. In 1582, the county reverted to the Dukes of Brunswick. The castle was subsequently used as an official residence and played a role, particularly during the Thirty Years' War.
