Hubberg Castle (Fruthwilen)

Hubberg Castle is located in the Thurgau village of Fruthwilen, municipality of Salenstein. The castle was first mentioned in 1377. From 1399, the estate passed to the Collegiate Church of St. Johann in Konstanz. In 1580, it was bought by the nobleman Gabriel Reichlin von Meldegg, under whom it received the status of a "Freisitz" (a type of noble residence with certain privileges) and was then called "Huebberg". After several changes of ownership, the castle was sold to farmers from Fruthwilen in 1799. Since then, the building has remained in peasant ownership and has been inhabited by several families. The double residential house, which was baroque inside at the beginning of the 18th century, consists of two almost identical halves with large round-arched portals. It has two solid floors and one half-timbered floor.

After the Second World War, Hans Leip lived in Hubberg as a tenant for twenty years. The German poet wrote the lyrics to the world-famous soldier's song Lili Marleen in 1915. A mural by him still exists on the 2nd floor today.
