Hubertusburg Castle
Hubertusburg Castle, once a magnificent hunting lodge of the Saxon electors, rises in Wermsdorf. It is known as one of the largest Baroque buildings of its kind in Europe and played a significant role in Saxon history.
History+
The construction of Hubertusburg Castle began in 1721 under Augustus the Strong, who intended to use it as a royal Polish and electoral Saxon residence. By 1724, the building was largely completed. Between 1733 and 1752, the originally three-winged main building was transformed into the semicircular complex visible today, with numerous artists contributing to its lavish interior. During the Seven Years' War, in 1761, the castle was plundered and severely damaged on the orders of Frederick II of Prussia. Despite this destruction, it became the scene of historical events: on February 15, 1763, the Peace of Hubertusburg, which ended the Seven Years' War, was signed here.
