History+

The first documented mention of Hückeswagen Castle dates back to 1189, although the Counts of Hückeswagen were already named in 1138. In 1260, the Counts of Hückeswagen sold their county to the Counts of Berg and relocated to Moravia. Subsequently, the complex served as a widow's residence for Countess Margarete von Hochstaden. After numerous pledges in the following centuries, the designation of the complex changed from a castle to a palace in 1397.
