Hürbel Castle

The Lords of Freyberg were related by lineage to the Lords of Hürbel. They probably came from Graubünden. In 1521, they built the castle in Hürbel, which became their residence from that time on. In 1726, the castle was extended. In 1816, the lordship passed by inheritance to the Counts Reuttner von Weyl, who sold it to the Württemberg state in 1840. In 1843, the Barons von Welden acquired the castle and the estate. Due to unfavorable circumstances, the lordship fell into distress and thus had to sell all its property for the sum of 90,000 Marks to the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Bonlanden in 1907. They carried out many costly renovation and conversion measures, established the children's home "St. Josef" for orphans, and brought the estate back to astonishing prosperity. In 1981, they sold the entire estate to a shipowner from Hamburg and retired to the motherhouse in Bonlanden.
