The Lords of Freyberg were related by lineage to the Lords of Hürbel. They probably came from Graubünden. In 1521, they built the castle in Hürbel, which became their residence from that time on. In 1726, the castle was extended. In 1816, the lordship passed by inheritance to the Counts Reuttner von Weyl, who sold it to the Württemberg state in 1840. In 1843, the Barons von Welden acquired the castle and the estate.
